REGIONAL CLASSIFICATIONS The following regional classifications are available in the service: Municipalities The municipal classification is based on the 2008 municipal division, meaning the service provides significantly more detailed data at the municipal level than the current 2009 municipal division would allow. Municipalities form the LAU-2 regional classification level used by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat (LAU = Local Administrative Unit). Subsidy areas Finland is divided into subsidy areas for the administration and payment of agricultural subsidies. Three different subsidy area classifications are available in the EconomyDoctor services: The classification introduced in 1995 includes seven subsidy areas: A, B, C1, C2, C2p, C3, and C4. The classification introduced in 2015 includes two subsidy areas: AB and C. The A and B areas were merged, and the various C areas were combined into a single C subsidy area. This classification is available in EconomyDoctor (Taloustohtori) from the year 2000 onwards. The classification introduced in 2024 includes three subsidy areas: Subsidy region I, Subsidy region II, and Subsidy region III. This classification is also provided in EconomyDoctor (Taloustohtori) retroactively from the year 2000 onwards. Regions There are 20 regions in Finland. The regions form the NUTS 3 regional classification level used by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat (NUTS = Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics). Major regions Major regions are areas formed from regions, used in statistical contexts. Major regions form the NUTS 2 regional classification level used by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat. Under the name 'Major region' (Suuralue), EconomyDoctor (Taloustohtori) offers an older NUTS 2 regional division that is better suited for examining agriculture than the current one. In it, Finland is divided into Southern Finland, Western Finland, Eastern Finland, and Northern Finland. ProAgria Centers ProAgria Centers are regional organizations of the agricultural advisory organization. Some of the centers are Swedish-speaking, and their geographical operating areas overlap at least partially with the Finnish-speaking centers. The EconomyDoctor (Taloustohtori) services offer: - A newer division, which includes 13 ProAgria Centers, and - An older division, which included 20 ProAgria Centers. FADN / FSDN regional divisions The FADN regional division is mainly used in EU contexts (FADN = Farm Accountancy Data Network). In the FADN regional division used until 2023, Finland's four FADN regions were formed on the basis of the regional division as follows: - Southern Finland (Åland, South Karelia, Itä-Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Kymenlaakso, Pirkanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa, and Southwest Finland) - Central Finland (South Savo, Central Finland, North Karelia, and North Savo) - Ostrobothnia (South Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, and Ostrobothnia) - Northern Finland (Kainuu, Lapland, and North Ostrobothnia) Since 2024, an FADN regional division has been in use where Finland is divided into two FADN regions, and in the future also FSDN regions, as follows: - Southern Finland (Åland, South Karelia, Itä-Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Kymenlaakso, Pirkanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa, and Southwest Finland) - Ostrobothnia, Central and Northern Finland (South Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia, South Savo, Central Finland, North Karelia, North Savo, Kainuu, Lapland, and North Ostrobothnia) Sub-regions Sub-regions are areas composed of multiple municipalities, formed on the basis of commuting areas and inter-municipal cooperation. Finland is divided into 87 sub-regions. Sub-regions form the LAU-1 regional classification level used by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat (LAU = Local Administrative Unit). ELY Centres (Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment) The Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) were established on January 1, 2010. The ELY Centres bring together the tasks and services of the former TE Centres, regional environment centres, road districts, and the transport and education departments of the state provincial offices. There are 15 ELY Centres in total. For more information: www.ely-keskus.fi AVI Agencies (Regional State Administrative Agencies) There are six Regional State Administrative Agencies in mainland Finland, and they handle the licensing, supervisory, and legal protection duties of the former state provincial offices, environmental permit authorities, regional environment centres, and occupational health and safety districts. For more information: www.avi.fi Rural areas The classification of rural areas into rural types by municipality can be used as a basis for the regional planning and implementation of rural policy. The classification used in EconomyDoctor (Taloustohtori) is based on the municipal classification, and the municipalities are classified into four different rural types: - Urban centres - Urban-adjacent rural areas - Rural heartland areas - Sparsely populated rural areas
