The EconomyDoctor Greenhouse Gas Calculation service produces reports on greenhouse gas emissions from farms based on data from farms participating in the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). The enterprise-level FADN dataset maintained by Luke includes approximately 730 agricultural and horticultural enterprises annually. Results are weighted to represent the approximately 33,000 largest farms in Finland. These farms exceed the minimum economic size threshold of EUR 8,000 in Standard Output (SO).
The calculations are based on the methodologies used in the national greenhouse gas inventory (additional information: http://www.stat.fi/tup/khkinv/index.html). The reports provide emissions at the farm enterprise level and do not represent product life-cycle emissions.
Emission Sources
Methane emissions from livestock digestion originate in the digestive systems of production animals.
Methane emissions from manure management arise during manure storage. Nitrous oxide emissions from manure management are also generated during manure storage. Nitrous oxide emissions from soils result from nitrogen applied through fertilizers and manure, crop residues, peat decomposition on organic soils, and from leaching and atmospheric deposition. Carbon dioxide emissions from liming occur when carbon contained in liming materials is released into the soil. Carbon dioxide emissions from organic soils result from the decomposition of peat organic matter caused by cultivation. Changes in carbon stocks in mineral soils are calculated using the Yasso07 model, with input data including the quantity and chemical quality of carbon entering the soil through crop residues and manure, together with regional 30-year average precipitation and temperature data. At present, land-use emissions do not include the effects of land-use changes or changes in carbon stocks of woody biomass. Energy-related emissions are calculated on the basis of farms' fuel expenditures.
The Service Consists of Two Parts
1. Time Series and Standard Reports
The time series starting from the year 2000, as well as the standard reports for individual years, present greenhouse gas emissions by production line. Emissions are calculated per enterprise, per hectare, and per euro of Standard Output (SO) produced by the enterprise.
In the calculation of Standard Output (SO), the entire production of the enterprise during the reference year is valued using average standard prices and output quantities from the preceding five years.
Greenhouse gas emissions are grouped into emissions originating from agriculture, soils and energy use.
2. Own Criteria
The Own Criteria section provides a more detailed breakdown of the emission sources within each category. The user selects the desired category and up to four classification variables. Based on these selections, the system calculates greenhouse gas emissions for the resulting farm groups.
All results are calculated as weighted averages, and the tables are generated in real time.
